Dealing with counter offers

So, you've decided to move on to greener pastures and have accepted a new job offer. But just as you're about to break the news to your current employer, they hit you with a counter offer - more money, a promotion, promises of a better work-life balance. What do you do? How do you navigate the tricky waters of counter offers without burning bridges or making hasty decisions? Let's break it down.

Understanding the Nature of Counter Offers: The Temptation and the Reality

Counter offers can be tempting. After all, who wouldn't want a raise or a promotion without having to leave their current job? But before you get swept away by the allure of a counter offer, it's important to understand the underlying motivations behind it.

The Pros and Cons of Accepting a Counter Offer

On the surface, a counter offer might seem like a win-win situation. You get to stay at your current job with better terms and conditions. However, there are some potential pitfalls to consider:

🔹 Loyalty Concerns: Accepting a counter offer can sometimes raise questions about your loyalty to the company. Will you be seen as someone who only stays for a higher salary or promotion?

🔹 Future Opportunities: Will accepting a counter offer impact your future opportunities for growth and advancement within the company? Will you be perceived differently by your colleagues and superiors?

🔹 Trust Issues: Accepting a counter offer can sometimes erode the trust between you and your employer. Will they question your commitment and dedication moving forward?

How to Handle Counter Offers: Tips for Success

When faced with a counter offer, it's important to approach the situation with a clear head and a strategic mindset. Here are some tips to help you navigate counter offers like a pro:

🔹 Evaluate Your Reasons for Leaving: Before making a decision, take a step back and evaluate why you were looking for a new job in the first place. Are the issues that prompted your job search still relevant, even with the counter offer on the table?

🔹 Consider the Long-Term Impact: Think about the long-term implications of accepting or rejecting a counter offer. Will it align with your career goals and aspirations? Will it impact your professional growth and development?

🔹 Communicate Effectively: If you receive a counter offer, communicate openly and honestly with both your current employer and your prospective employer. Be transparent about your reasons for considering the counter offer and ensure that all parties are on the same page.

🔹 Seek Advice: If you're unsure about how to proceed, consider seeking advice from a mentor, career coach, or trusted colleague. Getting an outside perspective can help you make an informed decision.

Making the Right Choice: Trusting Your Instincts

Ultimately, the decision to accept or reject a counter offer is a personal one. Trust your instincts, weigh the pros and cons, and consider the impact on your career and professional relationships. Remember, your happiness and career satisfaction should be the driving forces behind your decision.

In Conclusion

Navigating counter offers can be a challenging and delicate process. By approaching the situation with a clear understanding of your motivations, open communication, and a strategic mindset, you can make a decision that aligns with your long-term career goals and aspirations.
While our core focus is public practice accountancy, we’re also trusted to support with wider hiring needs.

We regularly work on roles across finance, operations, and wider business support, depending on the needs of the business. That can range from standalone hires through to building out teams as companies grow.

Because of the nature of our work, we’re used to adapting quickly — understanding different roles, team structures, and what a good fit actually looks like in each case.

The approach stays the same — straightforward, honest, and focused on getting it right rather than just filling a role.

If you’re hiring and want a reliable, no-nonsense approach, we’re always happy to have a conversation.

Finance | Financial Services | Office Support | Property | Marketing | Legal | Automotive | Engineering | Human Resources | Information Technology
